Brazilians move to Portugal

More than 80,000 Brazilians now live in Portugal

Brazilians move to Portugal. Indeed according to the most recent official data (2018), there are 81,251 Brazilians in Portugal, which makes them the largest foreign community in the country.

However, consider this: the Brazilian population is 207 million inhabitants. What if many more Brazilians were to move to Portugal? Considering the scenario might be clever, to avoid missing a big opportunity.

Getting a residence permit in Portugal

Brazilians are increasingly buying in Portugal. Indeed, non-Europeans who invest for more than 500,000 euros in real estate can get resident permits and pay a flat 20% income tax rate.
Naturally, motivations to move away from Brazil are diverse. For some, emigration is the only way to flee LGBT persecution, and find refuge in Portugal.

Portugal creates a website to facilitate citizenship applications

Put under pressure by the massive arrival of Brazilians, Portugal is now speeding up the process for 130,000 inquiries in progress, the majority made by Brazilians. To do this, the Portuguese government has created a dedicated website, https://nacionalidade.justica.gov.pt/ , aimed to streamline the applications of citizenship. In 2016 there were only 136 applicants, of all nationalities. While last year, the amount jumped to 6,348, with an astonishing 85% from Brazil (5,412).

Yet not all applications are successful. Indeed, Portugal even sent back to Brazil a record 2,856 people in 2018. As this number is 100% higher than what is was a year earlier, it tends to show that some Brazilians are desperate to flee Brazil.

Brazilians, 20% of immigrants in Portugal

Due to this massive immigration in the recent years, Brazilians now represent over 20% of the total immigrant population living in Portugal. Also, they are now the 2nd nationality of foreign buyers in Portugal, with 250 million dollars invested last year.

For Rich Brazilians, Portugal is the New Miami

Last month, Bloomberg even published an article called “For Many Wealthy Brazilians, Portugal Is Becoming the New Miami”. Then again, it shows how trendy Brazilian buyers are now in Portugal.

Brazilians very active on the luxury property market

Considering the trend, it isn’t surprising to read that Brazilians now lead the demand for luxury real estate in Portugal. Yet if you think that Brazilians are only active for luxury properties, think again. Indeed, they are also now claiming a big share in the student-rental-market, as Brazil is now the #1 nationality among international students in Portugal (25%).
